Kings of Leon – Because of the times

Country bumpkins? Lemonade mixers? Kings of Leon are far from it. They are back with there new album Because of the times. If you like Queens of the Stone Age and DFA 1979 then you will like Kings of Leon (KOL) and if you don’t then there must be something wrong with you, seriously what’s your problem? Yes finally something slightly different for Indie Kids to listen too! Well KOL and the Klaxons.

I classify tracks 1-8 as Indie on this awesome track and the rest I classify as old time Rock. Something like Jet in relation to old time Rock but more in between Indie and old time Rock see>>>

Scale -

Right about there >>>>>>>>^

Oh the preciseness!

There are some religious references but please don’t just turn away this album for that reason. If you do, then you really don’t know how to listen to music, sorry but you don’t and you never will. The whole album doesn’t concentrate on religious aspects and KOL aren’t even a Christian band for that matter. I am not Christian, and I think you can tell.
One track, track 10 named ‘The Runner’ is lightly shrouded in religious lyrics. Though even if you don’t believe in Jesus (I don’t) its melody will soon be caught in your head like ‘Girls just want to have fun’ by Cyndi Lauper– don’t act like you never liked that song, because you did!

Track 1 ‘Knocked Up’ has a slow beginning and leads into a melodic tune and then rushes into a fast pace during the chorus. The song is about running off ‘Coupe de Ville’ with your pregnant girlfriend. And the eeriness of track 2 ‘Charmer’ reminds me much of the Deep South in The Skeleton Key where voodoo was once a common practice amongst the African community. The song reminds me of some evil preacher’s wife with too much time on her hands, and a liking for other men………
Lastly track 6 ‘My Party’ brings the more simple joys of Indie / old rock to life as its focus is on few lyrics and a ‘hootin’ good time!’ Much like the well-known ‘On Call’ (track 3) it is very easy to like and very easy to dance like a spazz to in the middle of the night when you think no one is watching.
Make sure you listen to the beautiful string fingering (yeah it’s dirty) of Matthew Followill - the lead guitarist and the kick ass bassist Jared Followill ripping it up in ‘Charmer’ and ‘My Party’. The catchy drum beats hit out by Nathan Followill – the drummer - in ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘Charmer’ want me to cream my pants. And Caleb Followill’s vocals fucken sing like the song is only for you – be grateful bitches the guy is shredding his throat for you! You must get on you knees for him – and not just for worship Strangely the acoustics of ‘The Runner’ remind me a lot of Baby Shambles ‘East of Eden’. Listen to them both and you tell me.

Overall I love the beats in this album and it just seems like this is just the beginning for the Kings of Leon and I know, like their million other fans, are going to be pleasantly surprised and expecting the next album to be even more satisfying.
